  2. Heart rate (HR)
  3. Electromyography (EMG)
  4. Sympathetic reactivity (QTc/QS2 ratio)

The Wechsler memory scale and visual-choice reaction time (VCRT) were also used to assess cognitive function. Measurements were taken before and after the intervention.

Results: Meditation’s Impact on Stress and Cognition

The stressful computer game led to a significant increase in physiological and psychological markers of stress. Conversely, meditation was associated with relaxation, demonstrated by a significant decrease in GSR, EMG, QTc/QS2, and questionnaire scores.

When meditation was practiced before a stressful event, it reduced the adverse effects of stress. The memory quotient significantly increased, while cortisol levels decreased after both stress and meditation. However, VCRT showed no significant change.

Conclusions: Meditation as a Tool for Mental Health Management

This study showed that meditation could produce a relaxation response, even in individuals who had never practiced it before. In addition, the practice of meditation reduces the physiological stress responses without eliminating the beneficial effect of stress, which is improved memory scores.
